What do Charlie Rich, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker, Paul Simon, Bob Seger, Jerry Lee Lewis, Steve Winwood, Rod Stewart, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Rivers, Cat Stevens, Boz Scaggs, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ronny and the Daytonas, The Hombres, Wilson Pickett, J.J. Cale, Leon Russell, Canned Heat, Percy Sledge, Kim Carnes, Dr. Hook, Rita Coolidge and Traffic all have in common?

The answer is Jerry Masters. From his beginnings in the music business playing bass for Charlie Rich to touring with Ronny and the Daytonas in support of their top five single "Little G.T.O." To the Hombres who rose out of the dust of Ronny and the Daytonas touring band which also included Memphian B.B. Cunningham, brother of the Box Tops Bill Cunningham. The Hombres big hit was "Let It All Hang Out" a song that is now being revived on the CBS TV series Cold Case and You Tube.

I remember seeing The Hombres on Memphis' version of American Bandstand, George Klein's Talent Party. "Let It All Hang Out" became an anthem to young rebels in the late sixties, I was one of them.

The Hombres were done by 1969; however the Jerry Masters' story was just beginning. Jerry reinvented himself in the seventies and became one the best recording engineers in the business and he did by starting at (but not limited to) the famed Muscle Shoals Sound Studios.

What makes this book different from others about rock music and the people who make it is that Jerry walks you in through the back door. You get an inside look of what goes on behind the scenes of the recording studio. This is not the filtered look at these artists that their publicists and managers want you to see, but a real honest look.

He tells his story in a down to earth, easy to understand style. He tells it like it was in a respectful manner to all concerned. This is not a "tell all" book, but a very frank and informative one. Jerry Masters is only tough on one person in his book and that is Jerry himself.

He has worked with many of my music heroes and shows you their human side. His matter of fact style of writing is refreshing and honest. But this is not just a story of rock music and the people who make it; it is a story of hope, survival and faith.

Jerry had many trials and tribulations along the way and he shares them with you in his brutally honest manner. This book demonstrates that even in your darkest hour there is always hope, always someone watching over you.

The book is a fun read. You see what it was like to be in a sixties rock group, see behind the scenes in the studio and get an inside look at some of your favorite recording artist. You will also see a man's struggle to survive and overcome his demons and emerge triumphant over them. When you close the book after reading the last chapter, you will feel as if you have known Jerry Masters for years. He shares with you not only his victories, and there are many, but also his weaknesses. You get to know Jerry Masters not only as a recording artist and extremely talented recording engineer, but as a man and he is a good man to know.

I learned that you can start out as an innocent child, turn into an alcoholic and addicted to drugs, be a womanizer, be an adrenalin junkie, and live to tell your story. This book gives you the good, the bad and the ugly and Jerry Masters cuts himself open, lays himself out on the table for you to see it all, the truth. Most of us would feel like we needed to mask the truth, but not Jerry. As painful as it is to read in some places, it also has humor in it and it shows that a little boy from Lit I learned that you can start out as an innocent child, turn into an alcoholic and addicted to drugs, be a womanizer, be an adrenalin junkie, and live to tell your story. I learned that anyone who finally reaches a point in their life where they actually come to the end of their rope, that their Creator is always there waiting for them and can give you a brand new life. It's not an easier life, but the retirement benefits are not only fantastic, they are eternal. This book was written by a guy who's actually "been there, done that" in just about every area a person could experience and somehow survived only to find a better life. Even though it's his first book, his writing style is rather unusual in that you feel like you actually sitting there listening to him talk to you. I recommend you get it right away. You won't be able to put it down. ...more

A well written autobiography about life as a music-boomer in the southern US from the 60s to the new centruy. Jerry worked in the music industry in the hottest music era in US history, where technology and music genres were changing faster than the speed of sound. He met and worked with the biggest names in the industry, but met the greatest celebrity of all in Muscle Shoals, Alabama in 1982 - changing his life forever. A must read!

This is a truly amazing book. It is a factual untold glimpse into the music industry as it is. A great read, and this is a promise, you will not be able to put it down. If you are interested in the music business, club dates, being on the road, or recording songs, this is a must read. You may also discover what music was made for.
It's OK to Google Jerry's or my name to check things out.

What a good read! I encountered the legendary music recording engineer, Jerry Masters online and exchanged friendly and positive discussions [vibes]. I was blessed to read "The Jerry Masters Story" and I am glad I did. Jerry's story is full of color, excitement, joy and laughter, pain, struggle, anger, love and all the 'GOoD' spices of life. I have read this book and I found it to be a very interesting book on a high school friend of mine, back in the 1950's in Little Rock, AR. It shows how a person's life can be turned around to live a Christian Life.
